LEAF SCULPTURE SERIES:
Art and interior design is often a way for human beings to create a 'natural' living environment, within a not so natural modern living space surrounded by concrete, steel and bustling urban environments. By bringing nature closer to us we can experience the peace and tranquility that nature provides without leaving our homes. "This is the intention of the 'leaf sculpture series' you see before you, to remind us of our intimate connection with nature and the beauty of planet earth." Through the collection of these forms, the works reflect on, and embody, an intimate attempt to recuperate and draw appreciation for the natural world. These sculptures of leaves and flowers each radiate a particular mood. Each piece is an original, tediously and painstakingly hand crafted using many layers of paper mache on a steel wire frame, painted in acrylic and then cast in high gloss epoxy resin.

My home for many years the pacific northwest coast of Canada, with it’s lush mountainous terrain and serene rainforests inspired me to create the “silverfern” series of wall sculptures, which have evolved to the latest and most detailed versions that you see in this photo. Each piece is an original, tediously hand crafted using many layers of paper mache on a steel wire frame, painted in iridescent pearl acrylic and then cast in high gloss resin. The slightly luminous finished product appears to be made of metal, when in fact it is extremely light and flexible, very elegantly hung on the wall with a simple finishing nail. Shown in these photos in large scale 5' and 6’ length, they can be ordered in any size for custom installations.

This highly texturized, multiple layered paper mache oak leaf, shown in large scale 5' by 7' height was created using a very thin chinese rice paper, which allowed me to create the detailed vein like surface. Finished in iridescent pearl acrylic, and epoxy resin, this piece was where I perfected my particular paper mache technique. Growing up in central Canada, I was always fascinated by the mighty oak forests that surrounded my home, and on many occasions found myself wandering amongst these trees during my youth. Rustic, modern, organic, and large scale the oak leaf is a powerful piece in my leaf sculpture series. |
